Work-Life Balance For Health And Sanity

Work-Life Balance For Health And Sanity Ive been working pretty hard since I got laid off last year (over 15 months) and havent really taken a vacation. And for the three years before that, because of my roles and responsibilities I hadnt taken my vacation time (I thought I was rolling it over, but when I got laid off they informed me that since I didnt use it, I lost it). It was interesting to meet with Dave Perry this week at Kennedys Recruiting 2007 conference in Las Vegas where we talked a little about running hard. He said that he is enforcing a personal policy of taking regular vacations. Man that sounded good! Especially now, as I write this post I am running on 3 hours of sleep (very early flight to Chicago) and not much food Im very tired, physically and mentally! This summer Im going to force myself to take two vacations one campout and one something else (havent figured it out yet). But I think its healthy for you (as my reader or JibberJobber user), for me, for my wife and kids, etc. I just cant run and run and run. I know its hard to slow down, or do something different. But I hope that you too can make sure that you get the proper balance of things for you and those around you. I dont think Ive ever brought bible scripture into my blog but this is one of my favorites, and it is a good starting-point for figuring out what your balance could/should be: And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. Luke 2:52 This shows four areas to consider for having a balanced life: wisdom knowledge, mental, etc. stature physical fitness, health favour with God spirituality favour with man social skills This scripture has had a profound effect on my life for a long time not that Im good at balance but it gives me a starting point to think about with. Hopefully its good food for thought for you, too! Business Com Resume Writing

Business Com Resume WritingBusiness Com resumes writing, in simple terms, is used by people who are aspiring to be employed in a larger corporation. The purpose of such writing is to submit a resume that clearly reflects their skill set and expertise. Essentially, they must make sure that their resume tells the employer everything they need to know about themselves in order to be hired.A lot of resumes are given by employees who are job seeking and require a business com. This resume writing helps these people to tell the company about their special skills, abilities, and experiences. It can also include their educational background and experiences in addition to their credentials, which may not necessarily match up with the role for which they are applying. Before writing a business com, there are certain things to consider. The first thing is to choose a template that you like, and then customize it as much as possible. The second thing to do is to compose a personalized cover lette r. The format in which the resume is written should include the most important details so that it can be easily read by a computer screen. When writing a business com, you can write about any aspect that you are interested in. In addition, you can write about any field of expertise that you are interested in, or even about hobbies that you enjoy. Of course, you can leave out your weaknesses and not include them at all. This means that your resume will be much easier to read. The career of the applicant in question will determine how much time and effort are put into business writing, and hence, how much they are willing to spend on the marketing campaign. It can include the format of the writing, the writing style, the content, the organization of the text, the division of subject matter, and the conclusion of the resume. Each and every part of the marketing campaign should be carefully studied and researched so that you can come up with the best resume. The company should also unders tand that this is a group activity rather than being just another part of the company's work.In addition, the resume should also be structured well in terms of its structure. You should also make sure that you have not misspelled any of the names. Doing so can make the employer unable to recognize your resume. If you want your resume to have an educational background attached to it, you can include the student from your particular field. This can help in convincing the employer about your skills and experience in your particular field. The same way, you can use testimonials to make your resume stand out. When writing a resume, there are many things to consider. A person needs to ensure that his resume has a good look, is clear, and conveys the right information. This will help him get a position he otherwise would not have gotten.

There are three career paths. One will fit you.

There are three career paths. One will fit you. I am reading Miranda Julys  book because she made  a great ad for her book. Its like a little film and after I saw  the ad I got upset that I cannot make such good ads for my books. But then I read that what she really loves is filmmaking. And anyway, I really dont love writing books. Books are too longmy writing sweet spot is about as long as a good blog post. Do you want to know the rule for blog post length? Eight hundred words. Because every big idea in the last 100 years has launched in an op-ed, which is 600 words, so how could you need more? I have been preaching this rule for years. And now Im breaking it. You havent gotten to the end of this post, and, frankly, neither have I. But we are both pretty sure Im not going to stop at 600 words. Id better put something really juicy in right now,  because there has to be a lot of value in a post if its going to be longer than my rule. So Im going to tell you that people are driven by one of three core things: achievement, affiliation, competence. When I was first learning about this, the coach gave me more simple words: winning, friends, craft. I took the test and found I was 100% motivated by achievement. I looked at my boss, who was sitting next to me, to make sure that he was not looking at me and thinking I was an egotistical money grubber because of my score. Then I saw that his score was the same as mine. I already had a huge crush on him, but that really put me over the edge. I wish I could find the link to the test but I cant.  But so what? So what that Im going to write a whole post based on a theory that appears to exist only in my head. Because once you see that there are three key motivators, you can see that there are three paths to being successful at work. The path to ruling the world. People think that the CEOs of Fortune-500 companies are self-involved jerks, but thats actually not true. The transition to top levels of management requires that you are not only a star performer but also that you care immensely about the growth of the people around you. The Harvard Business Review shows that narcissism is what holds back a lot of middle managers from reaching the top. Another thing you have to do to get out of middle management is shift from being a specialist to a generalist. I know, I know, I tell you all the time that you have to specialize. And its true. You do. Its so true, that on the roadmap that the Harvard Business Review presents for people to move into senior leadership roles, the first assumption is that you became a specialist to get to where you are. But to get higher, you need to get good at a wider range of corporate skills. So the path is this: early in your career you jump around to figure out what to do with yourself. Then you specialize and become a star performer in that specialty. Then you start cultivating an ability to help people, which will open up opportunities to get trained in new arenas of the company to prepare you to be at the top. Most people think, for a surprisingly long time, that they will be one day running a big company and making a lot of money. This will probably not be you just from the odds of it alone. Almost all Fortune 500 CEOs are ENTJs but only 2% of all people are ENTJs. And, let me just remind you that Im an ENTJ, and it would take me a mere month to run a Fortune 500 company into the ground, so way fewer than that 2% is actually capable of running a huge company. The path to building a career based on relationships. A much wider spectrum of you will be better at storytelling than running companies. And there are so many jobs that involve storytelling that we dont think about. Sure, a novelist is a job that involves storytelling, but look, even Miranda July cant make a living at it: she needs to do films that have big budgets so she can siphon off a living wage in sneaky ways. But all of marketing is storytelling. You cant sell something that doesnt have a way to connect with buyers, and buyers connect with stories.  Marketing is the place where stories are created, and sales is the place where you test those stories to see if they work. (This ad for Scotch tape is a fun example of storytelling.) This is a career path for people who care most about caring about  people. Also, heres some good news: Ode magazine reports that  people who tell stories are healthier. Which means that all the commenters who have read the stories of my life and then said that Im messed up are actually misguided. Thats really all I wanted to say. But I had to tell you the story about getting jobs as storytellers in order to get to where I can say this. See? Thats the power of storytelling. The path to living in details, and mastering your craft. There are sixteen personality types. By focusing on either being king of the corporate world or being a storyteller, we have covered a large swath of those sixteen. But some people are too analytic to guide either companies or stories. They need to work with data. I might be one of those people, because I keep links to articles I like in folders and spreadsheets and piles on my desk, and I think Im going to die if I dont tell you about all the best links. Its like link Tourettes or something. (Heres one!) But actually, Im not one of those people because I like obsessing about details more than I like details. I actually hate details. A lot of detail people focus on craft. They like order and precision. The photo up top is my seven-year-old sons self-portrait. Whats the line on the side of the page? I asked him. He said, Thats my ear drum. Below is a picture of me waiting around at cello lessons. Right after piano lessons. Both lessons make me die of boredom because music is math and I cant do math. But I take him because I really do believe in our power to know what we want for ourselves. I am alleviating my anxiety, and clearing off part of the pile on my desk, by telling you about this article I read furtively in the Harvard Business Review, during cello class, titled, Big Data: The Management Revolution. An aside: Have you noticed that most of the links in this post are from the Harvard Business Review? Its because I noticed that most of my pile is old issues of the Harvard Business Review. And I thought if I would just put these articles into blog posts then I could throw out the pile. I am cleaning house today. I hope the publicist at the Harvard Business Review is reading this. Her name is Julie Devoll. She will probably see the post now because publicists are addicted to their Google Alerts so they all have their own names in there, just in case. Anyway, I need to make sure she knows that Im writing about the Harvard Business Review  because  she gave me a complimentary subscription, and its expensive. I dont want to have to pay for it myself, but I need a paper copy so I can read it in the bath. Big Data is where the jobs are right now, and the jobs in that field will actually explode in the future. It is no coincidence, that among me and my three brothers, the only one of us who actually goes to work and collects a paycheck is the one working in big data. He talks all the time about buying up content sites so his company can manipulate data and sell it. I cant tell you where he works. My brothers are fine if I write about  our crazy family and frequent visits from the police. But mentioning their companies: forget it. So anyway, learning how to analyze data and draw larger conclusions from reams of small pieces is where the big job growth will be in the future. Right now, the Harvard Business Review reports that there are not people officially trained in this field. And theres a huge shortage. The people are mostly self-taught and they have a knack for  understanding  how to bridge the gap between big data and big business. Think Facebook: they have more data than God, but they cant translate it to profits. They are not the only company like this, though. And there are very few people with a track record for knowing how to approach data problems like this. So the important thing about a career is that you are doing something you are good at. The thing I really get from Miranda July is that Im not a writer like she is. Shes a craftsperson writer. She is a details writer. Im a writer like my writing is a company. I got really good at writing blog posts, and thats my specialty, but I like that my blog is a company also. Its so useful to know what motivates you: winning, relationships, or craftsmanship. If you asked me early in my life, I would have said being really good at something, because I like to write. But I see the life of writers, and I see that I consistently make the choices entrepreneurs make, not that writers make. Choosing a career seems endlessly difficult, but actually, most of work falls into just a few categories, and most of what we love to do falls into just a few as well.  Look at your choices. They probably reveal to you which of the three paths you should take.

Resume Information - The Importance of Important Resume Information

Resume Information - The Importance of Important Resume InformationThe most important part of any resume is the resume information. While it is possible to put up a good first impression with a little effort, you need to remember that it is only the first impression and it must be taken as such. It is much better to stand out in a crowd than it is to blend in. In this case, a resume should be a high profile document that helps to make a lasting impression and keeps the recruiter interested in your profile.Your resume should begin with some general information that is relevant to the position you are applying for. This can include details on your education and training, your experience, any awards or recognition you may have received, any previous employment and even your hobbies. Of course, it is also a good idea to include your hobbies in your resume. However, it is probably better to combine hobbies and general information together to make your resume easier to read. For your contac t details, you should include your name, address, telephone number and email address in your resume. The next section should give details of any academic qualifications you may have, including diplomas and degrees, professional qualifications and certifications. It is also worth noting that people who have worked on farms, where it is likely they will work, may also need a farm jobs section to provide information on their field. If you have worked on farms, it is still appropriate to list your work experience and education in your field. For example, if you have worked as a farming management consultant, then your resume information should include details of your expertise in consulting, farm management and agriculture. One important section of your resume to look at is the sales information. This is the section that contains your sales history from work which is relevant to the job that you are applying for. You should ensure that you list all of your sales that you have made over t he past two years on your resume.Your work history should contain dates, starting and ending dates and will have details of the jobs that you have held and how long you have been working at each. It is also a good idea to provide details of any training or seminars that you have attended.Although not normally required by most employers, you should list any professional qualifications you may have had that are relevant to the job that you are applying for. If you were involved in marketing, advertising or promotion, this may be an area of expertise you wish to include in your resume. It is worth noting that it is preferable to have a copy of your most recent employer's letter before you start your application. In this way, you can see whether there are any gaps in your resume information.Your educational details should include details of your undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications, including subjects included in your degree program. You should be aware that some employers will w ant to see more than just your qualifications in order to determine your suitability for the job, so ensure that your resume information includes details of your involvement in volunteer activities, internships and university study.

Video Resumes Love em or leave em

Video Resumes Love em or leave em The movie Legally Blonde showed Elle Woods, a young woman wowing Harvard Law School with a video résumé outlining her unique and interesting talents. While video résumés are still not the norm, many wonder if the best way to differentiate themselves from others is to use video instead of the traditional paper résumé. While an effective video résumé can help a person seeking a job or slot at a prestigious college, there are definite pros and cons. Job seekers are accustomed to making themselves look good on paper but it is harder to make yourself look good on video. Paper résumés make your case before you walk into the interview. It is easier for a recruiter or interviewer to forgive any fidgeting in person because your paper résumé has already told them that you have the skills for the job. If the interviewer has to sit through a video with several minutes of rambling dialogue, accompanied by nervous tics, and the sound of traffic or air conditioning in the background to be able to hear your skill set, you may not get to make your case before you lose the interviewer’s interest. Since video résumés are still new, there is no real standard set yet as to how these résumés should appear and how information should be presented. It can be easy for applicants to go wrong. Additionally, video résumés pose a risk to companies that paper résumés do not, legal risks that have caused some companies to discard all résumés that are accompanied by videos. When some companies these days black out names on résumés to avoid potential race or gender bias among those who review résumés, video résumés open employers up to potential claims of race, gender and age discriminationâ€"even how the applicant looks in the video résumés, in some instances, can clearly cause more problems for the applicant than they solve. Additionally, if companies are reluctant on a legal basis to view the video résumés sent to them for specific job openings, such companies do not go to online video hosting sites to view video résumés in the hopes of somehow finding the perfect person for their job. They are even less likely to search online when it means sifting for job candidates amongst films of people’s pets and music videos. However, technology has changed much of how people search for and get jobs, and as online video becomes more and more ubiquitous, some companies are changing the way they handle video résumés.  Job listing sites have combined forces with social networking sites, and online résumés in such venues are often combined with video résumés. Sites that specialize exclusively in hosting online and video résumés make it far more palatable for employers and recruiters to search for résumés. Some companies have popped up to help interviewers and job seekers make the most of this new technology. These companies help applicants put together a professional, edited video. Some have contacts with specialized areas of the job field â€" engineering firms, non-profits, etc. â€" and can send your video résumé to companies interested in such résumés. Many employers are opening up to video résumés because in some cases they serve as the “first round” of interviews, saving the company money and time. Properly used, video résumés can be an excellent format to showcase job experience as well as polished communications skills. There is still a novel aspect to video résumés so making still shows a willingness to embrace new technology and think outside the box. As long as applicants understand a company’s résumé submission policies, as well as ensure that their video is professional and in a venue a potential employer may frequent, it increases the chances this new form of résumé can help and not hinder their chances of finding employment.
